Governor Abbott called on the federal government Wednesday evening to close the makeshift shelter at the Freeman Coliseum — where migrant children are staying in San Antonio — amid “credible” complaints of abuse and understaffing, according to KSAT 12.

Abbott is directing the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to immediately investigate allegations of child abuse and neglect inside the facility, according to a press release.

“I am calling on the Biden administration to close this facility, and I am directing the DPS and the Texas Rangers to immediately begin investigating these allegations. President Biden’s disastrous decisions caused this crisis, and his administration must act now to protect these children, secure the border, and end this crisis,” Abbott said in the release.

The governor spoke about the complaints at a news conference outside the Freeman Coliseum on Wednesday evening.

Freeman Coliseum welcomed 500 unaccompanied boys —who migrated from Central America— on March 30.

The minors are waiting to be placed with sponsors or family members while they await asylum hearings, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News.
